Activity Description

This activity will provide an overview of treating pediatric acute leukemia, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Faculty will focus on identifying signs and symptoms, diagnostic tests, treatments, including the importance of clinical trials, and highlight The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s PedAL trial, a precision medicine clinical trial for pediatric acute leukemia. Finally, faculty will discuss psychosocial and other survivorship challenges and how to overcome these, including resources for support.

Target Audience

This CE activity is intended for oncologists, pediatric hematologist-oncologists, nurses, and oncology social workers involved in the care of patients with hematologic malignancies.

Educational Objectives

After completing this CE activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Describe common childhood blood cancers, including AML and ALL
  • Identify signs and symptoms of childhood blood cancers and diagnostic tests
  • Explain treatments, including the role of clinical trials, and LLS PedAL, a precision medicine clinical trial for pediatric AML
  • Describe management of short- and long-term side effects of treatment, follow-up care plans, and communication between the pediatrician/family physician and oncologist
  • Describe psychosocial and survivorship challenges and resources to support children and their familie
